PinExt WHY AS A PHOTOGRAPHER LOVES ACTION SHOTS

I love action shots. And for the most part the majority of my clients don’t mind them. Sometimes my subjects don’t really understand why I love them so much and chalk it up to crazy photographer artsy artsy stuff. But it’s so not the case.

Let me illustrate it for you! I, like most photographers rarely step onto the other side of the lens. And when I do it’s usually awful! Why? Because I know too much, I think too much and (I’m pretty sure I have one of those faces that just needs good lighting). So while a photo is being taken of me I’m second guessing everything. The tilt of my head the amount of smile, the positioning of my limbs, the turn of my body. And while that’s all going on I am not showing the camera ME! Over thinking it so to speak. A good photo looks nice to the viewer but for the most part the viewer doesn’t know why. And sure there are those instances that are lovely and magical because of the surroundings and ambience incredible lighting and such. But most good portraits show you THAT person. Some people are naturals at being themselves in front of the camera and some, not so much. I would be in the ladder category.

So here’s where the action shot breaks down all the barriers. It gets people out of their heads and enjoying themselves. It gets them smiling, naturally! It allows the relationship between two subjects to be seen. And it shows the flavor of that person.

This is Danessa and Orrie’s engagement shoot. These two were naturals. Especially Danessa. She has flirty appeal down and is great at communicating it. She’s just comfortable. Because I want my subjects to communicate something of themselves I give very little instructions. In this photo I asked her to put her hand up there on his face. I took a series from another perspective then changed my perspective and asked her to just look at me. And wham! There’s her flirt!

But in the second photo we decided to get them active and out of the norm. And voila there is so much to see. In their relationship and themselves. Hints of so much about them come pouring through.

They make a great shot. Throw a filter clean up the light and crop and it’s done.
